IRA vs Investing Directly surrounded by Mutual Funds or Stocks?

I max out my contribution to the 401k. I do not qualify for a Roth 401k. I can still invest up to $5000 in a tradtitional IRA near taxed proceeds but would someday be paying ordinary income duty rates on withdrawls from the IRA.

Instead of investing in the traditional IRA wouldn't I be better bad investing directly in a mutaul fund or stocks where on earth my earnings would be treated as means gains (currently 15%)?

Thank You

I own a 401k contained by swaab...

You can invest surrounded by stocks or mutual funds within an IRA - its not an either/or situation. I would suggest you start a Roth IRA instead of contributing to a conventional one. Your gain within a Roth are tax-free.

Where can I find a comprehensive schedule...

That's what I do. I invest mostly in index funds. All means gains are deferred until I deal in. Dividends are currently taxed at 15%, but this may redeploy soon, and go put money on up to marginal rates.

If you have kids, you can invest surrounded by tax-free accounts for their college such as 529 plansand Coverdell plans. you can read about this at

Answers:    I am contained by the same boat. What I own decided to do is progress ahead and do the nondeductible Traditional IRA each year.

Here's why: There is a duty law on files that, in 2010, will allow race in our situation to rollover our traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs in need regard to our income horizontal. Of course, we'll have to pay envelope tax on any appreciation, but after the IRAs will appreciate tax-free, and any withdrawals at retirement will be duty free as well. The excise may be paid contained by 2010, 2011 and/or 2012.
